Mom, I'm Giving You My Kidney

"For six years my mother has suffered from kidney failure—not just one, but both kidneys. It wasn’t as bad at first (as it got last year), so I decided to get myself checked to see if I was a match. It turned out I was! About two months ago, my mother started dialysis; something she was trying to avoid, but unfortunately couldn’t. (It is the procedure that purifies her blood, substituting what a kidney is supposed to do.) She goes 2-3 times a week in the morning, for four hours each day. She then comes home drained, tired, and helpless; and sleeps until 4-5 p.m. in the afternoon. She was so full of life before... She worked a full time job to provide for her five children and husband. Now, she has three beautiful grandchildren whom she cries for, because in her mind, she won’t make it to see them grow up. This woman gave everything for us! So, it’s time to return the favor. YES! I am giving my mother a kidney... She is the most loving and caring person I know. Seeing her suffer, breaks my heart. I decided to surprise her for Thanksgiving, with the help of everyone who loves her."

Sometimes it’s not the prescriptions of religiosity that heal. Sometimes it takes something more. Richard Ellis remembers “hurting so badly I just wanted to die.” In reality, he didn’t really want to leave this place, he simply needed things to make sense. Surrounded in religion, doubtfully praying and reading the promises of a seemingly ancient book all stopped short of getting through to him. None of it made sense. He packed his bags and took off from that cliché of an existence only to find himself knocking on the door of significance. He discovered “that ancient book” held more than words and there was a God who was more than a mystical figure.
